Maki Hayashida
Maki Hayashida (b. 1984, Japan) is a Tokyo-based visual artist whose work investigates social issues surrounding human consumption. She addresses these themes through photographic works employing various techniques, as well as installations that primarily use photography as a medium. By treating photographs as consumer goods, her practice also reflects on photography’s ambivalent relationship with the environment, while exploring the materiality and reproducibility of the medium in the digital age.
She graduated from the Faculty of Policy Studies at Kwansei Gakuin University in 2007 and completed an MA in Photography at the London College of Communication, University of the Arts London, in 2023. She was shortlisted for the LUMA Rencontres Dummy Book Award (2023) and received the Grand Prix at the Singapore International Photography Festival Dummy Book Award (2020). Her work has been exhibited both in Japan and internationally, including at KYOTOGRAPHIE International Photography Festival KG+SELECT (2021) and FORMAT International Photography Festival (2019) . In 2024, she was awarded the 17th shiseido art egg and held a solo exhibition at Shiseido Gallery in Tokyo.
